Derek R asked:

Well, I have been looking for a Flat panel TV, but dont know if I should go LCD or Plasma. I am looking for a 37-42 inch tv. The problem is, I dont know which one I should get. With the prices coming down on Plasmas and LCDS becoming popular, I really dont know.
I hear a couple rumors about both. It seems as if the Plasmas can get that burning picture into its screen and on LCDs, they can get ghosting or the pixels can go bad, needeng to replace the whole screen. I am only looking for 720p cause I really am not getting HD cable.I had someone offer me a 46 inch 1080 LCD about a year old for 800.00, but its used though and dont know about buying used Flat panels cause of no warranty. There are alot of factors in buying these tvs, expense vs size…Durability vs clarity. Its weird cause it seems some LCDS have a better picture than plasmas, but yet other plasma have a higher contrast and are cheaper. So, which one do you think is better to get LCD or Plasma? Also, if you can add any more knowledge that would be cool.

You have obviously done some good research into the whole plasma vs. LCD debate and haven’t fallen into the “Buy an LCD, ‘cos my mate says it’s better” trap.

If you are into movies or sport, buy a plasma.
If you are into games, buy an LCD.

Plasmas do not suffer from ghosting, LCDs do.

LCDs do suffer from screen burn (I know, I’ve seen it), but it takes much, much longer to occur than a plasma.

Both plasmas and LCDs will last for around 60,000 hours of normal viewing.

A typical 37″ LCD will draw around 200 watts.
A typical 37″ plasma will draw around 250 watts.

Plasmas do not run hot (I know, I’ve got one).

    LCDs weigh less than plasmas.

LCDs are generally cheaper than plasmas.

Plasma screens are made of glass.
LCD screen are made of plastic (except for the very high end models.)

Overall, 63% of the population prefer plasmas.

    Well I tell you what…..

You got KIDS in your Home??

They DESTROY LCD panel TV sets by throwing something at it…A thick piece of Lexan would even the playing field between it and Plasma when it comes down to little Kids…..

Other than that, LCD panels are considerably Better than 2 years ago with screen lag….and power consumption.

But Plasma does have it’s place with it’s burns that thwart gamers in Happy Land…..

And LCD certainly does have a long life too….

    So if you game….get LCD
If you like Sports…Get 120 Hz LCD
If you are into movies, TV shows only, then EITHER one is going to work for you….

Unless you have kids, then some Velcro and some Lexan will protect the LCD panel on that TV set…I’m sure you can make a screen protector for it.
